1946 June 15 Appealing for between 70,000 and 100,000 men and boys for the mining industry to bring the workforce up to the required figure of 730,000, Mr Hugh Gaitskell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Fuel and Power, said today that in every direction the industry was going to have a new deal. "This nation," he said, "would indeed deserve the doom and disaster which would overtake it if the mining industry were allowed to languish and fail through neglect." August 8th Some interesting figures on the recruits entering the cotton industry are given in a review of the activities of the Recruitment and Training Department of the Cotton Board since its inauguration three years ago. During the past eight months there has been an increase of 28,000 employees in the industry. Juvenile labour entering the mills from January to June, 1946, was 20 per cent of the total of children leaving school.
