Boltonians Bolton is quite a large town in Lancashire - in the north west of England. The Borough currently embraces the townships of Bolton, Farnworth, Horwich, Westhoughton, Kearsley, Little Lever, South Turton and Blackrod.
Anyway, this site is an attempt to record as many famous or noteworthy Boltonians as we can find - born, bred or adopted!
There are over 450 of them listed so far, including a worrying number of TV soap actors, a dynasty of executioners, a Nobel prize winner and a transported convict who founded a town in Australia!
Bolton Remembers the War is an oral history project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which has aimed to record and preserve representative living memories of Bolton people who shared the life of the town during the Second World War.
Work on the project began in May 2005 and was completed in May 2006. Over 30 people were interviewed and recorded. Many photographs, documents and artifacts were also scanned to be included in the Project’s end products, which include this Web site, a booklet and educational materials for local schools. The original interview recordings will be added to the North West Sound Archive’s collection housed in Clitheroe.
The project concentrates on the Home Front - the day to day experience of life in Bolton itself between 1939 and 1945 - but also documents the stories of some of those who began their War in Bolton and joined the Services later.
Here you can read the stories and listen to the voices of those who lived and worked in our town during the War and whose ordinary lives were changed forever by extraordinary circumstances.
Above all, these pages are dedicated to the memory of those who never came home to share the peace and freedoms that we enjoy today.
