1971 Much of the Bark Street area of Bolton town centre is to be demolished. The old Flax Mill chimney, once intended for preservation as a landmark and monument to Bolton's industrial history, is to come down in the process. The site bounded by Knowsley Street, St George's Road, Bridge Street and the River Croal will be developed with shops, offices and other modern buildings.
