Bolton’s Housing Committee has abandoned its plan to buy Grecian
Mill in Great Lever, Bolton, and redevelop the site for council houses
after hearing that the property alone was priced at £250,000.
It was decided to try to develop a slightly smaller area across the
road from the mill for housing purposes.
1985 Multiple users and uses
2000 August 9th
A man was helped to safety from the roof of a mills complex in Bolton
by two police officers. The man, who has not been named, was sitting
on the edge of the roof at the Grecian Mill on Lever Street, Great Lever
yesterday afternoon. Firefighters with a platform ladder were put on
stand-by near the mill as police officers talked to the man. He was
persuaded to climb down by two policewomen who helped him on to a first
floor fire escape staircase.
He is understood to have received treatment for mental health problems.
2001 April 30th
Arsonists have been blamed for a blaze which swept through a Great Lever
mill. The fierce fire swept through the Grecian Mill, Lever Street,
late on Saturday. Firefighters reported signs of forced entry into the
derelict commercial property. There was a strong smell of petrol. Smoke
filled the immediate area but the fire was not thought to have endangered
nearby residents. Fibre glass and drums of resin inside the building
-- which was being used as a storage area -- quickly set alight and
spread to the roof. It was the second fire at the mill in a week.
2008 Still in use, plans to refurbish this year
2008 Feb 12th
Part of a former mill building could be demolished to make way for a
new industrial unit. Developer Fardan Ltd wants to knock down a ground
floor unit which houses a car maintenance workshop at Grecian Mills
in Lever Street, Great Lever. Fardan wants to use existing materials
to develop a 335 sq metre replacement building reflecting the character
of the original but which has improved access and is more adaptable.
It plans to use the same architectural brickwork and slate tiles as
the original building. Councillors are expected to make a decision about
the plans in March.
